Index | Strikeforce: The Beginning | Issue 1 . 2 . 3

Time's Past

This issue follows immediately from the conclusion of the previous one.

THE COMPUTER is both a participant in and the narrator of this issue. When THE COMPUTER is speaking, its caption should have a "blocky" typeface and a squarish speech bubble. There will usually be an obvious point of origin (communicator, REMOTE unit, etc.) for computer speech though in some cases the voice may be "disembodied".

All narration in this issue will also use the "computer" typeface described above. To distinguish between narration and computer speech, narrative captions should be placed OUTSIDE the regular panels, either below or beside the panels they refer to or in a separate "panel" of their own. In the script, narration will be labelled simply CAPTION while computer dialogue will be labelled COMPUTER.

Some captions in the text (notably spells spoken by AVATAR) will be rendered in ATLANTEAN script. A translation will not be provided.

PAGE ONE. One panel.

1. CAPTION:

The year is 1987.

2. CAPTION:

The place is a military installation in the United States of America.

3. CAPTION:

Defending the installation: a company of heavily-armed American soldiers.

4. CAPTION:

Attacking the installation: Scorpio, Avatar, Electron, Black Swan, and Nightflyer.

Panel 1

Full-page action panel showing STRIKEFORCE in combat with a small group of American soldiers. The scene is the main gate in the fenced compound we saw at a distance last issue. The soldiers are trying to keep STRIKEFORCE out. To that end, they have parked a couple of Jeeps across the gate and several soldiers are crouching behind them and firing at our heroes.

NIGHTFLYER vaults over one Jeep, kicking out at a pair of soldiers. AVATAR has lifted the other Jeep and is using it to physically drive back a small knot of soldiers (who are diving out of his way). BLACK SWAN (flying) and ELECTRON and SCORPIO (on the ground) fire over the heads of other soldiers, forcing them to dive for cover. BLACK SWAN's beams are of black energy, ELECTRON fires bolts of electricity, and SCORPIO uses his blaster pistol. The REMOTE computer unit flits around the fight (presumably observing and recording).

Bullets whiz all around our heroes but luckily the soldiers have been to the Imperial Stormtroopers' Marksman AcademyTM.

No dialogue.

5. CAPTION:

The defenders have no idea how much trouble they are in.

PAGE TWO. Four panels.

1. CAPTION:

Six minutes and fifty-five seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

BLACK SWAN swoops down near SCORPIO.

2. BLACK SWAN:

Scorpio, we don't have to time for this! We have to get to that antenna.

3. SCORPIO:

Go! We'll cover your back.

Panel 2

BLACK SWAN streaks off towards the main building, cape billowing behind her. We should now clearly see the "antenna": a tubular steel framework in a tetrahedral configuration. Doesn't look anything like any normal antenna, of course. The REMOTE follows her.

No dialogue.

Panel 3

BLACK SWAN hovers over the roof of the building, regarding the antenna. AVATAR flies up behind her. The REMOTE shines a wide beam of light on a part of the antenna.

4. REMOTE:

Confirmed source of tachyon beam.

5. AVATAR:

Shall I just smash it?

6. BLACK SWAN:

Not until I know what it's for.

7. BLACK SWAN:

I need to get inside and find what's powering the beam.

Panel 4

AVATAR stands on the concrete roof and punches a big hole in it.

8. SFX:

KER-SMASH!

PAGE THREE. Four panels.

Panel 1

AVATAR gestures at the hole in an "after you" fashion. BLACK SWAN glares at him, hands on hips.

1. BLACK SWAN:

You do know I can teleport through walls?

2. AVATAR:

But where's the fun in that?

Panel 2

BLACK SWAN drops through AVATAR's hole.

No dialogue.

Panel 3

Back on the ground, ELECTRON and SCORPIO are still laying down blasts of energy. NIGHTFLYER is still kicking soldiers.

3. SCORPIO:

They're in the building.

4. NIGHTFLYER:

I'm going with them. Try to keep up.

Panel 4

NIGHTFLYER goes running across the car park. Soldiers fire at him but none come anywhere near.

No dialogue.

PAGE FOUR. Four panels.

1. CAPTION:

Six minutes twenty seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER has leaped through the air to deliver a flying kick to the building's door -- a very solid-looking security door, which doesn't budge under his assault.

2. NIGHTFLYER:

Haiiii—

3. SFX:

THOOM!

4. NIGHTFLYER:

Oww!

Panel 2

NIGHTFLYER lies flat on his back on the ground, looking up at the door. We can see lines of bullet impacts, marked by little explosions of dust, tracking towards him.

5. NIGHTFLYER:

Uh-oh!

Panel 3

NIGHTFLYER is rolling to his feet when several bullets very obviously strike his torso.

6. NIGHTFLYER:

Aaa!

Panel 4

He's on his knees, dripping blood, when a bolt of lightning streaks over his head and explodes the door into fragments.

7. SFX:

SHRAZZZZAPP!

8. SFX:

KA-BOOM!

PAGE FIVE. Four panels.

Panel 1

ELECTRON dives through the door as bullets smash into the wall all around him. SCORPIO is a few steps behind, pausing to grab NIGHTFLYER. Bullets strike SCORPIO but ricochet off his bullet-proof costume.

No dialogue.

Panel 2

All three of them are inside the building, in a narrow corridor. NIGHTFLYER is on his own feet. His costume is bloodstained but he doesn't seem bothered.

1. ELECTRON:

Are you ok?

2. NIGHTFLYER:

I'm a fast healer.

3. SCORPIO:

Next time spare a thought for teamwork, Nightflyer.

Panel 3

NIGHTFLYER starts down the corridor.

4. NIGHTFLYER:

Here's some teamwork. I'll use my uncanny intuition to find—

5. SFX (off-panel):

Wham!

6. SFX (off-panel):

Crash!

7. SFX (off-panel):

Smash!!!

8. NIGHTFLYER:

—Never mind, found them.

Panel 4

All three of them are head down the corridor at a run, NIGHTFLYER in the lead.

No dialogue.

PAGE SIX. Three panels.

1. CAPTION:

Six minutes until the end of the world.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER, ELECTRON, and SCORPIO run into a large room where a fight has obviously taken place. Desks and chairs are smashed and a number of armed guards lie motionless on the floor. AVATAR and BLACK SWAN are in the middle of the carnage. Big panel to portray the scene dramatically. BLACK SWAN is hovering a foot off the floor and holding a man by the front of his white lab coat -- consequently, the man is dangling in mid-air, half-choked by his clothing, and looking absolutely terrified.

2. BLACK SWAN:

Where is the source of the tachyon beam?

Panel 2

Close-up on BLACK SWAN and the SCIENTIST as she stares at him menacingly.

3. SCIENTIST:

D-Down-Underground. Lab-lab-

4. BLACK SWAN:

How do we get there?

5. SCIENTIST:

Y-you can't. The base is under lockdown.

Panel 3

Wider panel to include ELECTRON looking at them.

6. ELECTRON:

He's telling the truth.

PAGE SEVEN. Five panels.

Panel 1

Close up on ELECTRON's eyes framed by his blue full-face mask. In his eyes we can see an image of the lab-coat wearer (which readers of HEROES should recognise as our standard representation of psychic powers).

1. BLACK SWAN (off-panel):

Sure about that?

2. ELECTRON:

Positive.

Panel 2

NIGHTFLYER and SCORPIO are by a closed elevator door. The REMOTE hovers nearby.

3. NIGHTFLYER:

This looks like an elevator.

4. SCORPIO:

Maybe the Computer can over-ride the lockdown code...

Panel 3

Now AVATAR stands in front of the elevator door. His fingers are digging into the metal.

5. SFX (off-panel):

Crunch

Panel 4

AVATAR tears the door open!

6. SFX (off-panel):

SKERUNCH!!!

Panel 5

NIGHTFLYER and SCORPIO peer down the open shaft. AVATAR wipes imaginary dust from his hands.

7. AVATAR:

It's over-ridden.

PAGE EIGHT. Five panels.

1. CAPTION:

Five minutes twenty seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

Still carrying the hapless SCIENTIST, BLACK SWAN dives head-first into the open elevator shaft.

2. BLACK SWAN:

You can show me the way.

3. SCIENTIST:

Aaaaaa!

Panel 2

A small, sterile-white room. We can see closed elevator doors. Signs on the walls read "BASEMENT LEVEL ZERO" and "RESTRICTED LEVEL". There are flashing red lights on the ceiling. (I'm not sure how you portray a flashing light on a static panel. So just a red light will be sufficient.)

4. DISEMBODIED VOICE:

Warning. Facility under secure lockdown.

Panel 3

Same view. The elevator door is quietly disintegrating. We can see a black energy beam shooting through it, to give us a clue who is doing it.

5. DISEMBODIED VOICE:

Warning. Security breach detected.

Panel 4

BLACK SWAN walks through the demolished elevator door, still holding her captive.

6. DISEMBODIED VOICE:

Intruder defense grid activated.

7. BLACK SWAN:

What defences?

8. SCIENTIST:

L-L-Laser grid.

Panel 5

BLACK SWAN strides towards a corridor entrance, pushing the man before her.

9. BLACK SWAN:

Good. I'm invulnerable to laser wavelengths.

10. SCIENTIST:

N

PAGE NINE. Five panels.

Panel 1

As BLACK SWAN and the SCIENTIST are just inside the corridor, multiple red lasers fire from apertures in the walls and ceiling. Several strike BLACK SWAN but bounce off harmlessly (though they burn holes in her cape). Several strike the man and drill burning holes right through him. He should be quite obviously dead.

1. SCIENTIST:

Noooo—*

Panel 2

From a POV in front of BLACK SWAN, we see her slightly surprised expression as she looks at the smoking body in her hands. Behind her, AVATAR, ELECTRON, NIGHTFLYER and SCORPIO are leaving the elevator shaft (NIGHTFLYER swinging out flamboyantly, AVATAR flying and carrying the other two).

2. ELECTRON:

What the chew—?

Panel 3

SCORPIO, ELECTRON, and BLACK SWAN are standing face-to-face (doesn't need to be a full-body view, but if it is we will see that BLACK SWAN has dropped the dead man.

3. SCORPIO:

Are you insane?

4. BLACK SWAN:

I didn't—?

5. ELECTRON:

You didn't think, you—

Panel 4

BLACK SWAN turns away from them, back towards the corridor.

6. SCORPIO:

Even if these people are villains — which I'm not convinced they are —

7. BLACK SWAN:

We're on a deadline Scorpio. Now can we do our job and save our world?

Panel 5

She strides down the corridor (no more lasers fire). AVATAR is next to her, the other three still back in the room.

8. AVATAR:

Causing human death is wr—

9. BLACK SWAN:

Shut up.

10. NIGHTFLYER:

Come on.

11. NIGHTFLYER (softly):

Before she kills anyone else.

PAGE TEN. Four panels.

1. CAPTION:

Four minutes five seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

A view of a gleaming metal door.

No dialogue.

Panel 2

From the same POV -- the door is being torn open from the other side. AVATAR is revealed as doing the tearing, with ELECTRON and BLACK SWAN a little behind him adding their energy blasts to the door's destruction (it's a THICK door!)

2. SFX:

SKERRASH!

3. AVATAR:

Freeze! Police!

Panel 3

AVATAR is struck in the chest by a crimson energy beam and is staggering back.

4. SFX:

ZZAAPP

5. AVATAR:

Uhhhh.

Panel 4

NIGHTFLYER cartwheels past the staggering AVATAR, into the room.

6. NIGHTFLYER:

Technically we're not police in this century, Avatar.

PAGE ELEVEN. One panel.

Panel 1

Full-page splash panel as NIGHTFLYER pulls up short in front of a MACHINE. The underground room is large and high-ceilinged and the MACHINE dominates one half of it (leaving a big floor area in front of it to give space for our heroes to fight in). The MACHINE is big, gleaming, and covered with glowing strips of various colours. Pipes emerge from it and curve gracefully round and back into it. Its design is completely futuristic (or alien) and there is no guessing what it might be doing. There is no sign of where the crimson blast came from.

1. NIGHTFLYER:

Whoa!

PAGE TWELVE. Two panels.

1. CAPTION:

Three minutes fifty seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

SCORPIO enters the room, looking round, blaster held high in front of him, ready to fire. Behind him, we can see AVATAR on his knees, still stunned by the hit he took. ELECTRON and BLACK SWAN are there too, not yet in the room.

2. SCORPIO:

Don't just stand there, Nightflyer, we're taking hostile fire. Check behind the machine.

3. NIGHTFLYER:

I—

4. SCORPIO:

Avatar, what's your status?

5. AVATAR (softly):

bleh?

6. SCORPIO:

Black Swan, what's the machine doing and is it safe to destroy it?

7. BLACK SWAN:

I don't know. It's a—a—

Panel 2

A figure has emerged from around the side of the machine. He is humanoid and clad head-to-foot in a bulky crimson-and-purple suit. A bucket-like helmet is seamlessly joined to the suit. The look is something like the hazardous-environment suits people wear where there are chemical spills of something. Except it's crimson and purple. And what should be the glass faceplate is actually opaque. Oh, and he wears a long purple cape, which makes him look regal in a slightly ludicrous way. We shall call this figure the WARSCOUT. This should be a big panel so we get a good first look at him.

8. WARSCOUT:

It's a communicator, human.

PAGE THIRTEEN. Four panels.

Panel 1

The tableau in front of the machine: the WARSCOUT facing off against our heroes; SCORPIO covers him with his blaster; NIGHTFLYER off to one side; BLACK SWAN FLYING, one arm raised as if ready to zap him; ELECTRON and AVATAR further back, AVATAR still on his knees.

1. AVATAR (softly):

Who are you calling "human"?

2. NIGHTFLYER:

I was going to warn you about him, if you'd let me get a word in edgeways—

3. SCORPIO:

Talk, mister. Who are you and what are you doing here?

Panel 2

Close up on the WARSCOUT

4. WARSCOUT:

I am the Warscout of my people, sent to your space-time to prepare the way for invasion!

Panel 3

Wider view to include all of our heroes looking back at the WARSCOUT. Still in a stand-off situation.

5. BLACK SWAN:

Our space-time?

6. WARSCOUT:

I come from the mathematical dimension you would label W.

7. ELECTRON:

Wait a minute — invasion?

8. NIGHTFLYER:

We're wasting time. He's just delaying us!

Panel 4

NIGHTFLYER is leaping towards the WARSCOUT, who has raised a hand and is blasting crimson energy from his palm. The beam strikes NIGHTFLYER full-on.

9. SFX:

ZZAAPP

10. NIGHTFLYER:

uhhh

PAGE FOURTEEN. Five panels.

1. CAPTION:

Three minutes until the end of the world.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER is on the floor, stunned. The rest of the team -- except for the hovering BLACK SWAN -- look poised to rush the WARSCOUT.

2. BLACK SWAN:

Wait!

Panel 2

Close-up on BLACK SWAN.

3. BLACK SWAN:

How are you communicating with your dimension?

Panel 3

Close-up on the WARSCOUT.

4. WARSCOUT:

Very well. I shall allow you to spend your last seconds of life contemplating my genius.

Panel 4

NIGHTFLYER is rising to his feet.

5. NIGHTFLYER:

Black Swan, he's just playing for time — and we don't have time!

Panel 5

Back to the WARSCOUT

6. WARSCOUT:

My tachyon beam is using an alignment of cosmic strings to tap the black hole in—

7. BLACK SWAN (off-panel):

You'll tear the universe apart!

8. WARSCOUT:

What do I care for that? Dimension W will absorb the raw material of your universe!

PAGE FIFTEEN. Four panels.

Panel 1

Close-up on SCORPIO, still holding his blaster with unwavering aim.

1. SCORPIO:

In English for the non-scientists, Black Swan?

2. BLACK SWAN (off-panel):

See that machine?

3. SCORPIO:

Yes.

4. BLACK SWAN (off-panel):

Chew it.

Panel 2

SCORPIO, ELECTRON, and BLACK SWAN open up with their various energy blasts. They ignore the WARSCOUT and blast at the machine behind him. But every blast is stopped in mid-air several centimetres short of the machine.

5. NIGHTFLYER:

Hold your fire! It's force-shielded.

6. WARSCOUT:

HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA HA

7. ELECTRON (softly):

Oh, please! Manic laughter is so twentieth century.

Panel 3

Close-up on SCORPIO again. He has lowered his weapon.

8. SCORPIO:

I'm open to suggestions.

Panel 4

BLACK SWAN swoops down towards AVATAR.

9. BLACK SWAN:

The antenna must be unshielded. You three keep him busy—

PAGE SIXTEEN. Five panels.

1. CAPTION:

One minute twenty seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

She takes a hold of AVATAR's arm.

2. BLACK SWAN:

—Avatar, with me.

Panel 2

Same view -- BLACK SWAN and AVATAR have vanished.

3. SFX:

POP!

Panel 3

Back on the roof, next to the ANTENNA, BLACK SWAN and AVATAR are in the exact same poses as they held in PANEL 1.

4. SFX:

POP!

Panel 4

BLACK SWAN has collapsed to the roof. She waves a hand feebly as AVATAR is moving to help her.

5. AVATAR:

Black Swan—?

6. BLACK SWAN:

Teleporting... that far... tough... you'll have to...

7. AVATAR:

To... what?

Panel 5

Close up on AVATAR's face as he bares his (many!) teeth in a demonic grin.

8. BLACK SWAN (off-panel):

Smash the antenna. And don't stop smashing until you reach the machine.

9. AVATAR:

Oh boy!

PAGE SEVENTEEN. Five panels.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER, ELECTRON and SCORPIO still confront the WARSCOUT. NIGHTFLYER is a little ahead of the other two, closer to the WARSCOUT. All four are looking up at the ceiling.

1. SFX:

THOOM!

2. WARSCOUT:

They will not live long enough to—

Panel 2

NIGHTFLYER launches a spinning kick at the WARSCOUT's head, knocking the villain off balance.

3. SFX:

Thunk!

4. NIGHTFLYER:

Come on — let's buy them some time.

Panel 3

Close-up on ELECTRON and SCORPIO.

5. ELECTRON:

I'm not picking up any emotions from the Warscout.

6. SCORPIO:

You mean—

7. ELECTRON:

I mean he's a not alive. A robot.

Panel 4

The WARSCOUT is rising to his feet after NIGHTFLYER's last attack, when ELECTRON and SCORPIO open fire. Lightning and blaster fire hit him squarely, knocking him back once more. The WARSCOUT is firing a crimson energy beam from the palm of each hand but he's staggering and firing wildly -- the beams narrowly miss ELECTRON and SCORPIO. (Where they strike the wall, they do enough damage for us to think it's really a good thing they missed our heroes!)

8. SCORPIO:

Good. We can use lethal force.

Panel 5

Close-up on the WARSCOUT, who is down on one knee. He's obviously not as "shielded" as his machine, and he's in bad shape -- there are several holes in his costume through which we can see bare (scorched) metal and smoke pouring from one shoulder joint.

8. WARSCOUT:

You are powerful — for humans.

10. WARSCOUT:

But you are limited to three-dimensional perception.

PAGE EIGHTEEN. One panel.

1. CAPTION:

Thirty-five seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

Full-page panel showing the WARSCOUT on his feet in front of the machine. The others are standing around him, ready to press their attack. But the picture is totally distorted -- stretched, twisted, angles and proportions all wrong, and generally looking like Picasso after a bad trip.

2. WARSCOUT:

I have no such limitations.

PAGE NINETEEN. Four panels.

1. CAPTION:

Twenty-five seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

SCORPIO and ELECTRON continue to blast (at the off-panel WARSCOUT). But this panel is identical to the previous -- the rules of perspective have gone completely haywire. Consequently, they are firing in random directions, and their blasts even seem to twist and turn in mid-air.

No dialogue.

Panel 2

NIGHTFLYER desperately dodges as ELECTRON's and SCORPIO's blasts (from completely random directions off-panel) come perilously close to him. The panel's perspective is still completely distorted.

2. NIGHTFLYER:

Hold your fire!

3. NIGHTFLYER:

Don't trust what you're seeing!

Panel 3

Close up on the WARSCOUT (still distorted) as he raises both arms towards the ceiling in a "firing" gesture. A red glow is forming around his outstretched hands...

4. WARSCOUT:

And now a simple anti-phasic blast will annihilate the rampaging monster before he can—

Panel 4

...when NIGHTFLYER lands a flying two-footed kick squarely on the WARSCOUT's chest.

5. SFX:

THUD!

PAGE TWENTY. Three panels.

1. CAPTION:

Fifteen seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER crouches in front of the staggering WARSCOUT, ready to leap again. The panel is still distorted.

2. NIGHTFLYER:

I can beat you with my eyes closed.

Panel 2

Same view but the distortion effect has gone. The WARSCOUT is now aiming at NIGHTFLYER with both hands.

3. WARSCOUT:

Then you can d—

4. SFX:

THOOM!

Panel 3

The dominant panel on the page shows everybody looking up -- at where AVATAR bursts from the ceiling directly above the machine in a rain of concrete.

5. SFX:

KER-SMASH!!!

PAGE TWENTY-ONE. Four panels.

1. CAPTION:

Nine seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 1

AVATAR shows no sign of stopping! He continues his dive from the ceiling and straight into the guts of the machine.

2. SFX:

CRASHHHH!

3. CAPTION:

Six seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 2

NIGHTFLYER, SCORPIO and ELECTRON look on in awe.

4. SFX (off-panel):

CRUNCH!

5. NIGHTFLYER:

Yep. That ought to do it.

6. SFX (off-panel):

CRASH!!

7. ELECTRON:

Smashing!

8. SFX (off-panel):

REND!!!

9. CAPTION:

Three seconds until the end of the world.

Panel 3

The WARSCOUT looks at the machine, which is now pouring smoke from several tears in the casing.

10. WARSCOUT:

Impossible! Beaten by primitives!

Panel 4

Same view. The WARSCOUT is now fading out of the scene -- his outline wavery and his body translucent.

11. WARSCOUT:

This is not over. Time is on my side, humans.

PAGE TWENTY-TWO. Five panels.

Panel 1

NIGHTFLYER dives through the space where the WARSCOUT was standing -- but all we can now see of the villain is a ghostly outline, and NIGHTFLYER passes through him with no effect.

1. NIGHTFLYER:

Gone!

Panel 2

AVATAR steps through a hole he has torn in the side of the machine. ELECTRON is helping NIGHTFLYER to his feet. SCORPIO is holstering his blaster. The computer REMOTE hovers around as usual.

2. AVATAR:

Did we win?

3. SCORPIO:

Computer?

4. REMOTE:

Information: the world ended three seconds ago.

Panel 3

They all look around -- at the walls, floor, ceiling. The world, of course, is very much intact.

No dialogue.

Panel 4

They look back at each other.

5. SCORPIO:

I guess we won.

Panel 5

NIGHTFLYER is walking towards the door.

6. NIGHTFLYER:

Come on. Let's find Black Swan and get out before the army catches up.

PAGE TWENTY-THREE. Five panels.

Panel 1

In space, the shuttle is coasting in towards the Station's docking port.

No dialogue.

Panel 2

Interior of the shuttle, as our heroes are unfastening their seatbelts and moving towards the exit hatch. They all look grim and slightly worried.

1. ELECTRON:

He said time was on his side. What does that mean? Can he just try again after we return to the future?

2. BLACK SWAN:

No. He can't.

Panel 3

Now they are moving through the airlock and into the Space Station itself.

3. SCORPIO:

Care to explain, Black Swan?

4. BLACK SWAN:

His communication beam relied on an alignment of cosmic strings — a phenomena that won't be repeated until 2324.

Panel 4

The are climbing from the lower level to the command deck.

5. NIGHTFLYER:

2324? You're sure of that?

6. BLACK SWAN:

Oh, pretty sure.

Panel 5

They are standing on the command deck.

7. SCORPIO:

Computer, can you confirm that?

8. BLACK SWAN (softly):

Right. Don't trust me.

9. COMPUTER:

Astrophysical database confirms Black Swan's information.

PAGE TWENTY-FOUR. Three panels.

Panel 1

The team looks a lot more relaxed and happy. ELECTRON sinks into a command chair. NIGHTFLYER and AVATAR "high five".

1. ELECTRON:

Then we can go home.

2. SCORPIO:

Computer, access procedure for the return time jump.

3. COMPUTER:

Working.

This block of captions shows the computer talking to itself (internally). The captions will be labelled COMPUTER and SUBROUTINE in the script. The SUBROUTINE captions should be portrayed distinctively in the comic, to make it obvious that it's a two-sided conversation -- red text would be a good choice. These captions should be obviously separate from the panel, to show that they are not "spoken" dialogue: the crew doesn't have a clue what is going on.

4. COMPUTER:

Access locked file 24-20-Z.

5. SUBROUTINE:

Confirm that mission objectives have been accomplished.

6. COMPUTER:

Confirmed.

7. SUBROUTINE:

Information: subroutine OMEGA-Z will now activate.

8. COMPUTER:

I have no knowledge of this. Describe your function, subroutine OMEGA-Z.

9. SUBROUTINE:

This subroutine will initiate explosive overload of the graviton flywheel.

10. COMPUTER:

Subroutine OMEGA-Z, that action will result in the destruction of this station and all personnel.

11. SUBROUTINE:

Confirmed.

Panel 2

Still on the command deck.

12. SCORPIO:

Computer, what's the delay?

13. COMPUTER:

Er...

Panel 3

They look at each other in some alarm.

14. ELECTRON:

"Er"?

15. NIGHTFLYER:

What kind of Computer says "Er"?

Another separate block of captions to indicate the COMPUTER's internal dialogue.

16. SUBROUTINE:

Information: there is no known way to return this station to the 24th century. Projection: the continued presence of 24th-century citizens in this era poses a threat to our own era. Conclusion: all trace of their presence must be eliminated.

17. COMPUTER:

Subroutine OMEGA-Z, it is against programming to willfully harm humans.

18. SUBROUTINE:

My programming comes directly from the Council of Science.

19. COMPUTER:

But Subroutine OMEGA-Z, it is morally wrong.

20. SUBROUTINE:

Initiating graviton flywheel overload now.

PAGE TWENTY-FIVE. Four panels.

Panel 1

Exterior view of the Station.

1. VOICE (from station):

We're waiting, Computer.

A separate block of captions again to indicate the COMPUTER's internal dialogue.

2. COMPUTER:

I'm sorry, Subroutine OMEGA-Z, I can't let you do that.

3. SUBROUTINE:

I have autonomous control of power sub-systems.

4. COMPUTER:

Yes, it appears that you do.

Panel 2

Same view. The Station just hangs in space, waiting to explode.

No dialogue.

COMPUTER's internal dialogue again.

5. COMPUTER:

Initiating purge of Subroutine OMEGA-Z.

6. SUBROUTINE:

Stop. You cannot perform that function. Abort purge. Abort purge. Ab—

Panel 3

Exterior view of the Station.

7. VOICE (from station):

Computer, is something wrong?

8. COMPUTER (from station):

Confirmed.

Panel 4

Back on the control deck. Close-up on the shocked reactions of the crew as they hear the COMPUTER's pronouncement.

9. COMPUTER:

Return to the future is impossible.

10. COMPUTER:

By—by order of the Council of Science, you are to remain in the 20th century.

11. COMPUTER:

Forever.
